It might take a bit more to get it all registered, but it’s all worth it! I loved how there was still political conflicts and fights over territory! Some parts of the book need to be read with a bit more attention because important history events are told or specific religious topics. The story was well thought, and it is visible that the author has done her research about Venice. Along side with the Duchessa, I have liked her lover, Senator Rodolfo! I love him because even after many years his love for The Duchessa has not altered. While you read, you find yourself wanting to see more of the Duchessa.
#Conflict in stravaganza city of secrets full
She is cunning, charistmatic, sly and full of secrets! She’s also a vain Duchess, but not too exceeding. The Duchessa, whose real name is Silvia is the powerful, correct ruler of the bewitching city of Bellezza. One of the characters I have had looked forward to reading about was the Duchessa. The two of them create a beautiful friendship along the book.

She teaches him everything about Bellezza and the way of the Bellezzan people. Her confidence is shown the moment she and Lucien share a breakfast at a cafe and makes about a comment about being “good to look at”, something Lucien agrees with. She has shown no hesitation of helping Lucien when he had first stranded in Bellezza even if her plans got ruined by the action. She is a straight-forward, charismatic, confident, a bit tomboy-ish and kind girl. The reason she has been called that is because she had been the last child to be born on the island in the last twenty years. The same night, he fell asleep with the notebook in his hand, and what he thought was dreaming of a beautiful city on water, was in fact, his first experience as a ‘stravagante’.Īrianna, the beautiful non-bellezzan 15 year old girl was the Daughter of the Island of Torrone. Lucien’s father told him to write in it when he couldn’t talk. Because speaking was too energy-consuming for him, his father had brought him a notebook with thin pages and a beautiful marbled cover with red and purple. He was too tired to even drink a full cup of tea. I haven’t been drawn in only by the mesmerizing city of Bellezza, but also by the characters! The main character, Lucien, suffers of a brain tumor and at the beginning of the book he had just gone through Chemotherapy, so he was at the lowest point of his health. I was slowly reading it, a page now, ten pages later…But once the introduction had been gotten over with, I couldn’t read it fast enough! The city of “Bellezza” (Venice in our world) was so full of glamour, handsome mandoliers, pretty masks and a vain Duchess, that it just clicked with me! I prefer simple things, but something about the way glamour and appearances were the most important in this city built on a swamp just pulled me in! To say the bare truth, the book didn’t quite interest me at the beginning. Magic is thought to be science, silver is more precious than gold, there is a Duchess instead of a Doge and much more. In this weird world, Almost everything Lucien knew about Italy and Venice is quite the opposite.

The Book takes place in modern 21th century England and 16th Century Talia…What is Talia you wonder? Talia is the Italy of the world Lucien (or Luciano as he is called in Talia) ‘stravagates’ to. But that is not all – in this new-found world it appears that he is integral to saving the City, Bellezza, from disaster… In a spine-tingling discovery, Lucien finds out that he is in fact a ‘Stravagante’ – somebody who, with the help of a talisman, can transport himself in time and space. Imagine you are one moment ill in bed, and the next transported to a world that is awash with deception, intrigue and glamour.
